INTERVISTA A ANYA WYLDE

Dear Anya, thanks for accepting our invitation, tell us a little about yourself. When did you start to write?

I have been writing poems and creating stories in my head since I was a child. My English teachers in school always encouraged me and read out my essays to the class. I went on to study English honours and loved every moment, but I never thought I would ever write a book.

Then Ireland went into recession in 2008. Dublin looked like a ghost town with shops and offices closed. The place I used to work in shut down and I couldn’t find any other work. So, I began reading a lot and realised that the sort of clean, fun book I wanted in these difficult times was rare to find.

So, I decided to write the sort of book I would like to read. I sent it to some agents on a mad New year night and the response from them encouraged me. I didn’t have the luxury to wait too long since the publishing process can take up to a year. I needed the finances so I self-published and haven’t look back since.

Where did your stories come from? How is your typical day as a writer?

My plots are not exciting, it is the characters that fascinate me. All my life I have been surrounded by eccentrics and I think their motives and actions inspired me to create stories. My father is a great storyteller, I remember as I child I used to listen to him tell his friends about his crazy childhood antics and making them laugh. I wanted to do something similar. I wanted to grow up and make people happy.

As for my day, it is always terribly busy. I wake up in the morning, drink coffee and get to work. Before the pandemic I used to work till three in the afternoon then mind my two young children. Now, I work till one and then it’s time to let my husband work while I keep the kids out of his hair. I do my research once they are in bed.

We know that you decided to self-publish for the Italian market. How did you come up with this idea? How do you know Mirella Banfi?

Come hai conosciuto Mirella Banfi?

I had been approached by a few companies wanting to translate my books before but to be honest I didn’t take up any offer until I connected with Mirella.

I intuitively trusted her. She has worked with some wonderful authors in the past and her credentials are excellent. I didn’t think I would find a more perfect translator for my book. I felt it was the right time and the right thing to do.

Let’s talk a bit about The Fairweather Sisters' series. Why did you choose to write historical Romance? And why do you set your stories in this particular period?

The first man I fell in love with was Mr Darcy. I think I was thirteen years old when I read Pride and Prejudice and the charm, the sweetness and the innocence of the book touched me. So, when it came time for me to write a book, I naturally chose the era that had made me fall in love in the first place.

Penelope is the first books about your series. What was your inspiration for “Penelope”?

I was very young when I moved to Ireland as a student. I felt a bit like Penelope, lost, overwhelmed and wild. I made some friends and realised that all of us who had moved here from a different country felt the same sort of uncertainty and I tried to capture that in Penelope and show everyone how natural and universal that feeling is.

Which is your favourite character and why?

Qual è il tuo personaggio preferito e perché?

I like Jimmy the highway man. He is a robber with a heart of gold. I don’t have villains in my books because I believe most people are shades of grey. Similarly, Jimmy has a soft, honourable side to him even when he is holding a gun to a wealthy Lord’s head.

Is there a character in the book based on you? If yes, who and in what way?

I think Penelope is based on a phase of my life rather than me. Other than that I love my children to bits just like the dowager adores hers.

If your book Penelope ever became a movie, which actors would you like as the main characters?

What an exciting thought! I would like an Italian man to play the Duke of Blackthorne. They are all so gorgeous. As for Penelope, I think an Irish actress would do well. Unfortunately, I don’t watch movies. The last one I watched was a few years ago so I wouldn’t be able to give you names.

What is your favorite scene in “Penelope”?

The moment when Penelope realises, she is in love. Her toes curl.

Why would Italian readers read Penelope?

Perché i lettori italiani dovrebbero leggere Penelope?

It is a light-hearted romantic comedy. It is the sort of book that would appeal to people of all ages. I think humour and love are core human emotions that are inherent in everyone irrespective of which country they come from or how old they are. And Italians I know are warm, loving and very romantic. The perfect audience for my books.

Why did you choose to write witty Historical Romance?

Perché hai scelto di scrivere Romance Storici divertenti?

I can’t write sad sagas. I have tried and it was a spectacular failure. I like being happy and making people happy. I enjoy turning a bad situation into a positive one. I was fed up with people moaning and crying in books, on television, and on the news so I decided to write only cheerful books.

When people are ill, they turn to books like mine to escape their reality, and the emails I get from them are a joy and encourage me to keep my work carefree.

Who are your favourite female authors? Have you never met them in a Convention or similar?

I enjoyed Enid Blyton as a child, Jane Austen as a teenager and Toni Morrison as an adult. Other women authors I enjoy reading are Julia Quinn, Christine Feehan, Charlaine Harris, J.K Rowling, Tamora Pierce, Trudi Canavan, C.J Archer and so many others.

I am very shy and never go to conventions. I only started posting my photo on social media after years of being an author. Even then, I keep my private life away from my work. A lot of my acquaintances don’t know I write books.

We know that your favorite book is Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Have you ever thought about writing a retelling ispired by it?

I would love to write a children’s fantasy book one day but I have to wait for the right idea which hasn’t hit me yet. I wouldn’t dare to attempt a retelling. It is far too nuanced for me to meddle with. I could never do it justice.

Could you tell us something about your future projects?

Quali sono i tuoi prossimi progetti?

I have almost finished writing the fourth book in the Fairweather series and it should be available in English soon. It is called ‘Miss Jane Fairweather’. The third audio book for the Fairweather series ‘ Dorothy’ should be on sale soon, as well, which is exciting.

Is there anything else you would like to tell to your Italian readers?

If you love to laugh at incredulous antics and enjoy toe curling romance then the Fairweather Sister’s series is for you. And if you enjoy the book then write to me and let know. I love interacting with my readers.
